The New King Gillette Razor seems to be exclusively offered by Walgreens at this time. The online resource states that the razors are out of stock online, as well as not available in stores. However check your local stores in-person as many have been able to find one or two in the Shaving section of the store. This is one of a multitude of new "King Gillette" items now available at Walgreens retailers.
Review of: New King Gillette Closed Comb DE Razor and King Gillette Blades
Initial Thoughts:
RAZOR:This razor is typical of a $30 dollar entry level razor being made from Zamac and closely if not exactly has the look, feel, weight and design, in this authors opinion of a Muhle or more likely a EJ-89 head. Blade positioning and gap would indicate this is very mild DE razor
BLADE: The razor comes with a tuck of 5 blades, branded and marked as "King Gillette" Russian made, probably re-branded Astras. Inner wrapping is good with no glue spots on the blade,
Weight / Balance:
The only knockout of the package is the weight, which of course is subjective, however is it a beefy razor. The balance is very tail heavy in my opinion for those that like a two to three finger light hold on a DE. This will require a bit more of a grip as the tail does want to drop. So it requires a bit more concentration on keeping proper blade Angel
Fit / Finish:
As stated above being Zamac with a Chrome style finish and spiral knurling give this a rather modern appearance. It would have been thought, as a "King Gillette" it would be more retro in style. When wet the Razor combined with it's tail heavy nature can be a bit slippery, but all in all a good looking razor with no noticable mold marks or quality control problems
The Shave:
There is a SVLOG in my video section that discusses the shave in a bit more detail, however this is an extremely mild razor. IMHO a two pass shave will be MINIMUM to get good results. With a three-pass and clean-up required for a BBS shave. Again, only negative marks are on gripability and weight
Post Shave:
As is expected of a very mild DE with a smooth blade no irritation or any feedback from alcohol based aftershaves. face is smooth, although as stated an extremely mild shave.
Summary:
Overall for the price and a chance to own a New DE razor from Gillette, Is it worth the $30.00 for razor and blade. YES. These are far superior that any of the other "supermarket" style DE's that are out there, and again it is a Gillette. If you are looking to capture the magic of a days-gone-by razor in hopes Gillette is trying to recapture the Golden-Era of shaving? Well you will be disappointed in that regard. This is a Modern razor, being marketing by the shell of the Former Gillette that is trying to re-capture a shaving market that has left them in the dust. Proctor & Gamble, The owners of Gillette, Art of Shaving and a conglomerate of others, is still trying to make up lost time for the ruination of Art of Shaving, Gillette and may others based on Bottom line numbers, hiring inexperienced, young, people whom have no idea the wants and needs of the Shave buying public. This can be proven just by looking at the comments to Gillette over the last 10 yrs. For the most part they do not listen to consumers, and have canned responses.
That being said however, it is all not gloom and doom. It appears with this release, maybe some wax have been removed from the corporate ear canal. Although a meager 1st attempt ( aside from the heritage) it is an attempt. Hopefully we will see further products.
This razor will become a favorite of the collector, and just to have a Gillette that is new makes with worth the price of admission. A decent one for the price, provide a nice smooth mild shave, and had the King Gillette name How cool is that?
