Straight razors come in wide variety of blade thicknesses, from wedges, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full, and extra full, all the way to bellied full hollow. It amazes me how the old timers managed to precision grind these razors to such imperceptible thicknesses without grinding them through or burning them up.
I’ve heard for years that some blades are as thin as a DE blade, but naturally, I wasn’t going to bust my blades to find out. I had to see this to believe it and a natural opportunity presented itself to me. While salvaging scales last night from some broken old blades, I found one with just the right crack to demonstrate the thinness of an extra full hollow. As you can see from the video, the blade can flexed much like a DE. No wonder you can feel some of them flex against your skin as you shave with them.
What’s your thinnest blade? What is your preference?
