Homelike Shaving Colibri

I’ve been lucky enough to have been given the chance to trial the Homelike Colibri for the next week on a pass around.

For those of you who might not know about this razor, it’s made in Russia by the same company who make the Start and Taiga razors.

Colibri translates in English as ‘Hummingbird’.

The razor is made from 316 stainless steel and the set comes with a grippy handle (the knurling of which is similar to a Karve) and 4 SB baseplates (0.80mm, 1.10mm, 1.30mm and 1.50mm).

I shaved with the 1.50mm baseplate a couple of nights ago and really enjoyed the shave.

It felt like a Carbon Cx ++ plate in terms of face feel and was noticeably more efficient.

I compared the Colibri with the 0.80mm baseplate to the Start fitted with a 0.90mm SB baseplate this evening.

I’ve rated the comparison as follows:

Smoothness: The Start felt ever so slightly smoother.

Blade Feel: The Colibri had just a touch more blade feel.

Efficiency: I couldn’t tell them apart in this respect.

I also had a head shave with the 1.50mm baseplate tonight. It has, as I had hoped, turned out to be an excellent head shaver.

I’ve taken some comparison pictures of the Colibri with a Start OC and Carbon Cx to show the differing dimensions and blade tab differences between them.

I plan to compare the Colibri to a RR Game Changer 0.84, the normal Carbon Cx and the start with a 1.12mm baseplate over the next few days and will write up my findings below. [emoji846]

Great pictures and nice review. I am waiting for the Colibri 1.30 OC razor to arrive. Its probably at NY ICS and who knows how long that will take. I was going to buy the 1.50 base plate but decided on the 1.30 OC. I notice Homelikeshaving is selling a lot of these razors.

The 1.3 OC sounds like an excellent choice. [emoji106]

I prefer the 0.9 OC to the 0.9 SB on the Start. I’d be interested to hear how you get on with it when it arrives. [emoji846]

I compared the Colibri with the 0.80mm baseplate to a GC 0.84 SB today.

The Colibri felt very slightly smoother by a whisker and both the blade feel and efficiency were equal.

I also compared the Colibri fitted with the 1.10mm baseplate with a Start fitted with the 1.18 baseplate last night, and undertook a face and head shave with both.

The 1.10mm felt smoother than the 1.18mm with blade feel being identical. The 1.18mm was noticeably more efficient, though.

Both the Colibri 1.10mm and Start 1.18mm reasonably good head shavers but neither are anything special in this respect. I did enjoy using the 1.10mm baseplate on my face and, based upon this shave, think I may end up preferring it to the 0.80mm.

I agree with you there mate.

I usually shy away from large blade gaps, but this razor seems to defy conventional wisdom in that respect.

I shaved with the 1.30mm baseplate today.

This was my second shave with this plate and it has proved to be the jewel in the crown for this razor when it comes to face shaving. It’s smoother than the other 3 plates and has minimal blade feel. It gives great audible feedback as well.

It doesn’t shave as close as the 1.50mm when it comes to head shaving but does a good enough job.

This is definitely, for me, the best all round baseplate for this razor. I still prefer the 1.50mm baseplate when it comes to head shaving and I suspect that the 1.50mm plate will also be better for clearing 4 to 5+ days worth of stubble.

A comparison shave with the Homelike Colibri 0.80mm baseplate and a Haircut and Shave N075 this evening.

I changed my blade choice and used a Feather.

This resulted in the smoothest shave I’ve had from the 0.80 plate so far. There was virtually no blade feel and the efficiency was identical to the H&S.

It was really difficult to tell the two razors apart and the only thing I could detect was slightest bit more blade feel from the Colibri (and it was very slight) and a very little bit more drag from the H&S.

The change to a Feather seems to have made a difference with the 0.80mm baseplate and it certainly performed better than either a Polsilver or Rapira Swedish Supersteel in this respect.

I’m looking forward to my final shave with this razor tomorrow night when I’ll compare it against a Carbon Cx razor.

Final shave with the Colibri last night.

I continued with a Feather blade and compared the 0.80mm plate against a Carbon Cx with the regular baseplate.

This proved to be a very interesting shave. I literally couldn’t tell the two razors apart in terms of smoothness, blade feel and efficiency.

The only differences I could detect were a difference in handle weight and the Carbon having a hollower sound to it as it sliced through my stubble.

This proved to be a great end to my time with the razor.

Suffice to say another one is already winging it’s way over to me from Russia as I write this.

Yes my head is down and I feel terrible and guilty

Did my first shave with the Colibri OC with 1.30 lower plate. The gap looks huge but the shave was extremely smooth and close using an Astra SP. My usual two passes got me to BBS easily. What might bother some but not me is the ends caps do not cover the blade. That is because the head is short. Fit and finish are absolutely beautiful. My suggestion is if you want to buy one use the Postal service International Priority Express (expensive). Although it took nearly a month for me to get this razor I consider that not bad considering all the world wide mail issues due to Corona Virus.
