Being a Newfoundlander, it is also a solemn day, as it is the anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel which was at the start of the Battle of the Somme. Nearly the entire Nfld battalion (we were not part of Canada then) was wiped out by the German machine gun crossfire when ordered over the ridge.
