The Gillette New gets lot of great reviews, which generally praise it's smoothness and efficiency. I can't say that mine exhibits either of those properties.
When I first got it, it was downright rough, which turned out to be due to a bent cap. The dealer I bought it from replaced it, and it helped. Though I found it a fun razor to shave with, I can't say that I'd every have called it either smooth or efficient.
After trying the RFB, which is all of that and more, I wondered what's the deal with my New? So today I decided to put another cap on it, and used the one from a Canadian Tech (kindly sourced with the help of our friend @Techichi ) When comparing the two caps carefully you can see the Canadian has a bit more of a domed shape and it's always given me smooth, close shaves.
The Canadian top cap on the New this morning delivered and absolutely stellar shave experience, going from rough and fussy to a smooth, efficient, confidence inspiring shave.

Having had top caps on vintage Gillettes make or break a razor more than once now, my take home message here is - If you have a few vintage Gillettes laying around and some are unexpectedly rough, try playing around with the other top caps in you collection. Who knows, it make make all the difference.
(The other bugaboo is a bent base plate which can happen too but that's a harder fix.)
