Hello all. I migrated over from another shaving site after receiving a bingo email. I haven't been active on any shaving forums for a while. For those of you who don't already know me...

My name is Pete, I'm 39 and live in a small town north of Sacramento, CA. I've been married for almost 12 years and we don't have any kids. Until we're blessed with kids we keep ourselves busy with three black labs. I work in a casino surveillance department.

I've been wet shaving for several years now. I use either a "magic" shavette or a Gillette New OC. I have quite a few soaps, but typically only use 3-4 in rotation. I have a number of straights that I don't currently use. The biggest issue is that I haven't taken the time to learn to hone proficiently.

Welcome Pete. Hope to see you posting here more regularly like you used to. You forgot to mention that you also make a good soap! I still have a little left of each that you sent me during the Bingle Exchange.

Eiverg? I see what you did there, but I can't pronounce that, so we'll just go with Pete.

Welcome Pete! Good to see you again!

The last time I made soap might have been for the bingle exchange. I picked up some rose scents to make more at some point. Project acquisition disorder might be a real thing.

Call me anything as as long as TOU allows.

Welcome on Pete! Nice to make your acquaintance.

Finally, another Californian and not to far from me! I’m in Sacramento myself.

I’ve avoided honing as well in the few months I’ve picked up an SR for learning. I am loving the process though and really loving the folding Feather SS I got recently to supplement.

Welcome Pete. I suggest that you do not try to tackle straight razor shaving and honing at the same time. When learning the straight razor, you always will be questioning if your crappy result is a function of your crappy edge, or your crappy technique. Don't ask me how I know this. At any rate, there are plenty of people around here who will ensure that you have a shave ready razor to learn to shave with. You can practice your honing, but compare the edge to the one that is shave ready and honed by someone else.

McVeyMac - That's wise info, thank you for sharing. I'm decently experienced with using a straight. I should have articulated differently. I use a shavette instead of a straight because I'm not very good at honing. I just need time to gain confidence and experience with honing.

I'll see what I can put together for a soap tutorial. I started with a pretty solid recipe and made some changes. Honestly the hardest part of making soap is the fragrance.
