For the Love of Barbasol

I know, I know, it's canned foam. Most of us got into this hobby to escape the cartridge razor world. Myself included. I dove straight down the rabbit hole, acquiring tons of brushes, soaps, razors, and splashes. But there is one vestige that has remained from the old cartridge world for me : Barbasol.

I have quick growing whiskers, a trait apparently most men on my father's side share. My typical wet shave routine has always been to shave after a shower. This is the relaxing shave all of us enjoy. I will say I don't chase BBS anymore and do a 2 pass WTG/XTG hybrid that delivers a DFS every single time. When I lived Downtown, I showered and shaved before work. But when we moved to the suburbs last year, I had to start waking up at 5am to catch the train, so my showers shifted to the evening. What I quickly learned is that despite shaving around 7pm, I had visible stubble by lunchtime at work.

That's where Barbasol came back into the picture for me. Every morning I whip out a can, squirt some in a brush, work into wet whiskers for a few seconds, and do a single WTG pass with a DE. It takes about 3 minutes from turning on the water to throwing on a splash and mows down the visible stubble, leaving me good to go until my normal wet shave in the evening.

This two-a-day shaving ritual that started some time around 2018 isn't something I've widely shared as I think many guys would simply tell me to get a better technique and get BBS in the evenings. While that could be true, I've been doing this wet shaving thing for over 7 years now and don't believe it's a lack of skill. More importantly, I actually enjoy using the Barbasol. I had used it exclusively for the 10 years before discovering wet shaving, and my father had used it throughout my childhood. It not only scratches a nostalgia itch, but I actually find the canned foam extremely usable with a little water worked in. The small travel cans are my go-to for carry-on air travel as well.

Wet shaving is something deeply personal to all of us. And for me, doing a quick morning shave with Barbasol has become both an effective and enjoyed piece of the hobby. I'm looking forward to sharing not only my love of wet shaving with my new son, but also my love for Barbasol.

So what about you, Cadre? Anyone else out there reach for the can of Barbasol with any regularity?

IF.... I was going to grab a can of foam.... it would be Barbasol. If for no other reason, the history and nostalgia of it all. I do have one of the 100th anniversary cans in my display at home. I also have a few other Barbasol pieces including a few glass jars and a Barbasol DE razor.

I have actually never used canned foam stuff. Just bar soap back in my cart days.

I don't know if it's the scent or the nostalgia (or both) but whenever I see a can of Barbasol for sale somewhere I always feel like I should grab it. It isn't bad stuff and it can be made BETTER with a little extra water splashed onto your face and worked in with your hands, the thinned down lather is super slick and still provides far more density than you need. I imagine you could figure out how to use it with a bowl and brush if you wanted to, whip out the excess volume as you add a bit of extra moisture (maybe some essential oils now and then) and you could be a Barbasol man all the time. In all seriousness, you could grab a bic twin blade and do your WTG pass and not offend me.

The best part of having a little one in the house is you have an excuse to have barbasol in the bath/shower. I ALWAYS had a can in the shower, I would spray some on the glass doors and let my boy(s) play while I showered. They would wash themselves with it and smell great. They didn't eat too much of it, and what little they did eat didn't seem to do any long term damage. ...the docs say the drooling and leakage was probably caused by my wife's cooking not the barbasol.

So is this picture pre or post shave ? Just asking 😂😜😎

If it works for you, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.. ;) (y)

Ain't that the truth. It's super easy to get caught up in the latest artisan soap release, latest-and-greatest razor handles machined from solid unobtanium, etc. Which is why I think I benefited from taking a step back from all the hype and realizing that it's really just shaving at the end of the day. Whatever works for me is what is important, no more "keeping up with the Joneses" FOMO or worrying about others criticizing the use of canned foam.

The addition of water really makes a difference for sure. I don't always use a brush at 5am but simply wetting my face and working some water into the foam before smearing makes it so much slicker. Hadn't thought about using it as a fun bath-time toy - I love it!

Ever thought of doing a Barbasol-scented tonsorial?! I have used and enjoyed CaD (back when it was Barbersoul years ago) but would kill for a CBL Tonsorial scented like Barbasol! ;)

So is this picture pre or post shave ? Just asking 😂😜😎

This is a "I only slept 2 hours last night cause someone decided he was hungry every couple hours so no shave yet" picture from 4am this morning as a matter of fact! 😂

Nope, never, haven't touched the stuff in over 12 years. But I get why others do. Sounds like you have a routine that works good for you and that's what is important. (y)

I do love the smell of Barbasol Original. Classic.

Never used the cream for shaving though except once. Not worth it :ROFLMAO:
