A BIT OF BACKGROUND:
As most of you know I prefer straight razors above all else, however I do have a collection of Both Vintage and Newer DE's including a Weber, and Most recently the Feather ASD2. Being an SR Shaver 85-90% with another 5% with SE's leaves me with liking an aggressive razor. I had been looking at the ASD2 for years but never tried on as most if not all reports were it was a mild as a tech, and in some cases even more so. After seeing @Majorrich show one and then @Spider 's review it just so happened (thanks shaving enabler Gods) that Sam aka @woodpusher just so happened to have a pass-around going...... Why not get to try one... will not buy one... not aggressive enough...... Ya OK. The CEC CEO got CEC'd.
Tried the razor and fell in love with the overall simplicity, no nonsense ease and non thinking of the shave, soooo I it just so happened that @NurseDave did not like his recently purchased one so we arrive here ( how's that for stars aligning). Anyway.... during the pass-around it was thought that a Feather Hi-stainless ( thought to be one of if not THE sharpest DE blade) matched with its namesake DE would provide the best shave, and it did , but very Mild..... very Mild. So during a zoom call this discussion came up ( before I bought one ) and @dangerousdon and some other wondered what it would shave like with an alternate blade. Don suggested a Voskhod and I just happened to have some so the experiment began, and how we get to the reason for this post.
I did notice a marked difference in the shave. The ASD2 was more aggressive and gave better results. "Hmmm how could that be?" "The Feather is the sharpests thinnest blade on the market right?" Yet here we were I got at least 6-7 more hours of smoothness after the Voskhold. "OK, OK I was getting used to the razor and its angles Right?" "NO I have techs, and other DE's that is not it". So I forgot about it started searching and finally bought one as mentioned above, really for those days I want a super fast shave.
I had done a review video, promptly forgot about it, when my " second conscious" and my "shave accountability partner" @Spider asked during a call how that could happen with a DE Blade who by most manufacturer standards were essentially the same. We discussed various options and I decided to look into it further, since the ASD2 arrived today with a tuck of Feather Hi -Stainless, and of course the Voskhods I already had.
Low and behold there is quite the difference. The bevel width on the Voskhod is much wider and a what appears to be a bit more aggressive angle, as the actual blade is indeed thicker, which would cause a bit more of a blade gap. I did not have a micrometer to measure, but visually, although tiny there was a difference. That coupled with a deeper bevel, could possibly account for the difference. The Feather has a very thin bevel and although sharper, it could also account for it being milder yet efficient. It was hard to get in photos, as I had lent my macro lens to a buddy and did not have it here. But who knows.. Comments?
