Charcoal Goods Moving

Currently Brian lives in Yakima, Washington but due to family commitments he is relocating to Oregon sometime after the summer. As you are well aware if you are a CG fan Brian makes three levels of razors in brass, copper and stainless steel. He also make at least twelve different style handles also in brass, copper and stainless steel. According to Brian in this environment this type of business model is not sustainable. When the move is completed the plain (maybe) is to sell his CNC equipment and farm out his razor business to a machine shop. In order to do this he is creating one generic razor and and handle so as Brian say it "it won't get screwed up" . In other words you have to do what you have to do. All the completed ready to ship razors are sold out. The only thing left are handles and some brush aluminum handles. To me this is terrible news because CG products are second to none. As far as the new razor head is concerned according to Brian its in development stage but it might be a mid aggressive head that gives a great shave. We will see. The following is two handles that might be considered for future sale. There is no picture of the head at this time.
I in no way are compensated for bring forth this information to you.

Sad news but thanks for sharing here and best wishes to Brian on his move.

He is probably thinking he over expanded and with this economy could be a out of business in 6-9 months. By having a limited number of products and lower overhead he could survive then expand at a latter date. So here is the choice food on your table or a clean face🍽

I wonder what makes it not sustainable if he’s got all the important pieces of the business already? Perhaps he’s still under a lot of financing from the machine and shop rent?

Still, have to respect his decision. Good luck to him in this next phase!

He has to move (no choice) Brian would have to sell all his CNC equipment and buy an existing machine shop or bring his equipment with him and rent space. Its easier and more practical to farm out work rather then to continue making multiple razors heads and a lot of different handles. If you check other vendors (Blackland, H&S and Carbon) they have much less stock and most farm out their work and keep it very simple.

I guess the point is, everything you state is true but it has always been true. Something has changed to make him go anew route. Carrying debt for equipment may have been it or something else. The move is just the opportunity to do the change.

No Dave he is not relocating just to make a change. He is moving to be closer to family and other reasons. There is a definite purpose to the move. However, I have just learned that for a while he will continue making razors business as usual but after the move he will go to generic razor production that will be lighter and a lot cheaper to purchase say around $125.00 Eventually he will make his usual razors. He is very restricted at present until the state opens things up again.

He is the artist in Artisan and his creativity coupled with his great razors will be missed in their present form. Perhaps his 1-2 future offerings will become cultist in following like Wolfman (as he only makes 2 razors). I wish him the very best and success as his creativity will be missed as there is no Artisan remotely as skilled to fill the void

I am only guessing but the coronavirus probably has a lot to do with it. He sees how other small businesses are and will fold. It is scary. Getting lean is the only way.

I understand that before he moves he might make some more razors.

I wish Brian the best and will be buying one of his new razors in support, and in hope of his business returning to normal. He does amazing work.

I've had the privilege to use a CG razor, and all I can say it's it's one of the best I've used, and the guy who loaned it to me, with a much larger artisan collection agrees, he whittled his collection down to just two the CG and a Wolfmann.

Well if there's any good new in this, it's for pauper's like me, the new model might actually be feasible, I really love the thin head design but did find the weight (and price) a bit much for my petite hand.

Sounds like a great choice, especially in this fiscal climate... If he can carry some of his quality and engineering over, he'll probably make a killing.

I'd be more apt to choose a $125 razor over a $500 one. Everyone has their limits. For me, it's typically in the $100 range. This fits, where I would previously have ignored CG based on price. Again, personal preference.

I hope this works out well for him. I will definitely be watching CG more closely.

Thanks.
