CBL tub and puck consistency

I like firm soaps. The only CBL soap that I've tried so far is the Tonsorial Roasted Oatmeal Stout. I like the firmer puck as opposed to the softer consistency of many of the newer soaps.

Are all of the Tonsorial pucks similar in consistency, and how do the premium soaps compare in this regard. I'm especially interested in any CBL veggie soaps.

All of the tonsorial soaps are going to be firm, the roasted oatmeal might possibly be a touch softer due to the beer in the base but it shouldn’t be all that different. The premium base is way softer, even when I say it’s firmer than it had been it is still quite soft.

As far as a Veggie soap goes, I generally don’t make any for sale. I Just happen to have 6 tubs sitting on my aging shelf as we speak (type) that I made in November. They are a special run made in the same way Martin D Candre makes their soaps which is why they are sitting on the shelf to dry. I filled the specially painted tubs to the top and they will be pressed/stamped with my logo when done. I may keep one for myself and offer the others for sale around Easter.

If there the there are some Cadre members that want a similar custom run I don’t mind making another batch, it’s not terribly difficult.

I'd like to try your veggie based soap. When it's ready.

Never used MdC, but from all the veggie based soaps I've tried so far. They have all worked well for me.

Every one I’ve purchased has some funk. Is this the nature of this soap or am I getting some duds?

I’ve bought nearly every scent he has, and multiples of many. Never had any funk.

@Batman, Most likely the scent of the tallow isn't something that you find yummy.

Nope....almost all of the soaps I have are tallow based and not putting out the whiff.

CBL and one of my Jeeves of Hudson Street have the funk.

No offense to the makers...they perform fine.

Perhaps it’s the particular wagyu tallow of CBL? It does give a very distinct scent that underlies all his premium base soaps that I’ve not smelled in any other artisan base. Or is the issue you have with each of his premium, tonsorial, and master barber lines?

Don't forget that different sources of Tallow can have very different smells. not to mention the rest of the ingredients and the processes used to produce the base. all of that can effect the base scent before anything is added.

which of the CBL bases have you tried?

These things seem to be pretty person dependent. I've had a couple other companies that something in their base really stood out to me and I could smell it in most of their soaps through the scents. Other folks didn't have that experience.

I have only tried the Tonsorial and Hemp based soaps, but I get nothing from them in the way of "funk".

I do, however, think I have a slight sensitivity to that tallow scent. I pick it up (very lightly) in Stirling and a little bit more prominently in Mike's. Some scents seem to drown it out better (eg. Mike's Bay Rum hides it well, his barbershop does not... To my nose). There are other brands, but these two come to mind.

One thing I've noticed with both of these soaps... When I lather them, the odd scent disappears. If I'm not crazy / mistaken in this, perhaps it would be a way to gauge if your picking up tallow (ie, more sensitive to it) or actually have a bad puck?

Just a thought.

I have some tonsorial as well as a couple of samples from a meet up.

I agree with the one poster that also mentioned Stirling...In my experience I have no issue with most scents of theirs but there’s a couple that had “the whiff”.

Bummer! May be best just to ask Chris if there’s anything he can do for ya or if he’s aware of an issue. He’s in and out a lot here, usually pretty responsive.

@Batman if i’m not mistaken, you have at least a couple of the premium and one of the tonsorial soaps. The premium soaps I believe you have are Pretty powerfully scented so it would be surprising if you were getting a whiff from the tallow in the base UNLESS something is wrong with the soap itself. I just handed off my last tub of Alpine that had been sitting on the shelf since about November 2018 and it was as powerful and fresh smelling as ever and I still have a few of my very first tubs every made.same story, so i can confirm sitting on the shelf at an average temp of about 80 doesn’t lead to funk or rancidity....age AND use might be a different story. My tonsorial soap has not been around that long and it uses a different type and amount of tallow, as well as a different blend of oils and is designed to have very little I saponified fats/oils or remaining moisture. So rancidity is unlikely with the tonsorial even with usage, no matter how you decide to store it between uses. Jeeves is an all together different formula but is probably an older tub. I can’t comment with any certainty about his oils etc but I have a tub that I know is at least 3 years old and has been stored in the same general conditions as the CBL brand soaps (because I own the Jeeves tub) when it hasn’t been in use and I haven’t had the tub go ‘bad’.

I really don’t know what you are smelling but I doubt it funky tallow. I know a lot of people are quick to associate a soaps scent with tallow in the formula but I can assure you that my method of making BOTH bases involves completely saponifying the tallow and cooking a long time after that part has been done. The likelihood that any animal fat remains in the soap is essentially zero, there may be other fats like coconut oil or Shea butter etc but the tallow has most definitely been saponified. I am fairly certain Jeeves and Stirling and most other artisans will/would say the same. There are many good reasons to ensure this is the case, other than rancidity concerns. NOW, saponified tallow or coconut oil have very distinct smells, smells you might not like. That whiff you are getting could be one of those. I have made 100% tallow and 100% coconut soaps (so I know how they behave) and I can say they each smell different but I don’t think either smells bad.

If you are getting the same ‘whiff’ from the tonsorial soap as you get from the CBL premium, Jeeves and odd Stirling then I am truly stumped. The Tonsorial base is honestly quite simple and about as pure an example of tallow soap as you can get. If not for the tonsorial base I would think you might be smelling other fats or butters like shea butter.
