2025 Eucris Lathering Challenge

Wouldn’t it be amazing if that was the secret origin of the name, and all that ad copy on the box about a Greek origin was total bunk

16 April - attempt 2
The accumulator bowl shows shockingly little product after attempt 1, leading me to believe the unbelievably hard puck doesn’t allow enough product with normal agitation to lather properly. I used a boar brush in hopes of getting more to work with. Adding to the accumulator I hope to see some results. Alas! This attempt was fruitless, but I plan to grate the puck into the accumulator bowl and will try exploring this avenue with different brushes.

Eucris - Day 3

Ok. Since yesterday didn’t work as planned, I decided to go to the manufacturer and see what their instructions said, and I found this:

“To achieve the best shave, the barber’s at Geo. F. Trumper recommend only shaving after a bath or shower and preparing the skin with protective Trumper’s Skin Food; a Badger Hair Shaving Brush is the most comfortable and effective way of lathering. Thoroughly wet the brush and work up a rich lather with the Eucris Hard Shaving Soap. You can increase the richness of the lather by working the brush in the palm of the hand or in a shaving bowl or mug, lightly dipping in water to add moisture if required. Lather the beard using a circular motion and shave in the same direction as hair growth. Rinse with cool, clean water and re-apply Trumper’s Skin Food to nourish the skin and protect against the elements.”

So, I took a shower. Put on some Trumper Sandalwood skin food, Grabbed a Simpson’s Best Badger Keyhole, and tried it this way

Wet (not dripping) badger brush to a dry puck. This led to lots of airy foam

Kept trying to get more soap on the brush and wound up in a ok place. Once I went to my face and the skin food could help, the lather stabilized a bit, but it still wasn’t anything to be excited about.

Got a 3 pass shave, but wouldn’t say this is the way to go. 🫤

17 Apr - Eucris test - Day 3

Shave stick approach, Synthetic brush

Today started off similar to yesterday, but instead of a minimal applications to the face, I aggressively rubbed the soap on my face against the grain trying to get as much soap on my face as I could. Then I went to my face with a wrung out synthetic brush trying to build a lather with as little water as possible. Soap was pretty thick, so I did need to add a little water. Lather seemed to come together, at first, but never really got there. Did a lot of paint brush strokes to try to get as much air out of the lather. Lather still didn't thicken up much. Didn't dissipate quickly, but was starting to as I finished up the first pass. Lather for the second pass was abysmal, lol. Most of the lather I built was on my face for the first pass, and little was left behind in the brush. This lather dissipated quickly.

Shaves for both passes were excellent, the slickness really trumps the lack of stable lather. One interesting observation is rinsing the soap off my face was a challenge. I rinsed my face normally, then dried it off with a towel, as usual.... but there was still soap on my face and I had to rinse it off again. This has never happened before. I assume, due to my heavy direct application, and little water in the brush that I didn't get all of the soap into the lather..... not that I think it would have made it any better if I did.

I had the same issue. I could feel that there was more soap on my face after a normal rinsing. What this soap lacks in lather...it makes up for in slickness.

Just out of curiousity....did you pre-soak your puck chunk before your first shave?

No. I wanted to attempt my first few shaves as is, before I tried soaking or grating. Once I exhaust my attempts, then I'll try soaking. Once I'm satisfied with my soaking attempts, then I'll grate it into a bowl for further testing.

This morning I looked at the accumulator to see how much is there and was surprised to see how little had, indeed, accumulated.

Yesterday. Today.

I grated some soap to try and perhaps get it into solution. I used the fine holes as if it were a hard cheese, and brothers, it is quite hard! I’m leaving it fluffy in hopes it incorporates more readily.

This is an off-cycle day so I’m collecting and preparing for the next attempt. While I’m tempted to try and lather without an accompanying shave, I’m not sure if it’s in the spirit of the challenge.
