Shave Newbie
I'm not good at shaving, I wear a beard and usually just let it grow all over my face. Hate shaving. But lately I've been trying to keep my neck cleaned up and my beard looking a bit neater. So I picked up wet shaving because I need more hobbies. And I feel like I'm just doing it wrong, but whatever. I stumbled across this forum and remembered that the internet used to be more than Reddit and X and Facebook and so I decided to sign up and say hey and maybe find some tips and tricks to make my shaving more enjoyable.

I feel like my lather game is weak. I got started when I told my kids I was interested in wet shaving so they'd have something to get me for Christmas. My daughter got me a little starter set that had a brush and bowl and some kind of soap and some kind of shave cream. I couldn't figure how to make that work properly, the metal bowl is tiny, and I don't think the soap was very good. I got the bigger ceramic bowl recently and some soap from Viking Revolution that lathers up much better, but it seems to end up really thin on my face. Also not getting a real close shave, that may just be my technique. Like I said, I'm not much of a shaver, I'm doing about twice a week now, but for years I just let it grow wild.

Oh I like board games, video games, dabble in astrophotography sometimes, little bit of woodworking, need to get back to fishing one day...
We've got threads for or adjacent to all of those. I'd be interested to see any photography you care to share! Check out the "Other Interests" forum to see some of our side hobbies.

I can't speak to that soap personally, but I'll assume it's a decent soap. How long are you loading your brush? You need to have enough product to get a good lather. Load for at least 20-30 seconds. Your pre-lather should start to look like it's getting thicker as you're loading before you stop. You can load for up to 60 seconds, depending on the soap.
I assume you are building lather in your bowl and not on your face? As you build your lather, add only a few drops of water at a time, and incorporate that water for 10-20 seconds at least before adding more. It's an art to figure out how much water is enough, but once you add too much it can become thin very quickly. Best to err on the side of too little water to start. As you apply it to your face if it still feels too thick, you can add a drop or two directly to your brush.

Also not getting a real close shave, that may just be my technique. Like I said, I'm not much of a shaver, I'm doing about twice a week now, but for years I just let it grow wild.
Technique comes with time, and may take longer without daily shaving. Focus on blade angle and as little pressure as possible.

Direct scientific correlation between the level of beard craziness and the level of craziness in the eyes! 😮
Agreed. But just LOOK at how refined and gentlmanly the nicely groomed beard is.

Qurstion for you @FakeMountainMan. Did you have help from a barber taming the beard? I ask because I have never been able to style my beard so it looked right and have learned that it is more than just trimming to a uniform length with a trimmer. I can barley maintain my goatee and stach these days, it's like the gray facial fur is staging a revolt

I pretty much did just trim it to a uniform length with the clippers. It is hard to get a good line that I'm happy with, so I settle for good enough.

I wore a beard for years and used a trimmer to create my lines. I then shaved my cheeks and neck with my electric razor. I now have just the goatee and use the DE razor to trim. If it needs more, I use the beard trimmer. I use the the beard trimmer to keep the overall length in check and for the stache.

I’ve got a cool Chuck Norris goatee shaper I break out every so often to get things back in line. There was a time when we had a mirror in the bathroom that had a bevel right where I stood to shave. Over the course of time this bevel distorted my view enough to make my goatee look like an abstract painting rather than a goatee. We still have that mirror but now I use a shaving mirror to avoid that problem. Problem now is that part of my beard is,dark and the rest is gray so I can’t see where things line up anymore.
