Feather Professional AC SS Kamisori...now what?

Just got my new (to me) Kamisori in and am looking at my Try A Blade sampler to figure which “guard” blade to choose first. I have a Feather Pro Guard, Soft Guard and Kai Captain Titan ProTouch with a metal guard. I am leaning towards Pro Guard.

Also, I have all forms of regular and mild AC blades...Schick, Kai and Feather...etc. So before I carve up this beautiful punIm....give me your opinion Cadre!

Nice! I'd recommend a few practice "shaves" without a blade just so you can figure out how to hold it without lopping off and ear or nose
Use a guarded blade first, I like KAI. In fact, the guarded baldes are great even when you've become a pro!

@NurseDave suggested the practice shave bit also. I will certainly be doing that and figuring the whole ambidextrous bit...

Some folks go ambi, Ed, while I have always used a straight with my dominant hand for all passes. Whatever feels more natural to you, but it's all going to feel strange starting out.

The guarded blades help stop the lateral, slicing, slippage that is a no-no. Once you develop muscle memory/control, that becomes less necessary. They're just as sharp, though perhaps a little shorter, than other AC blades.

The razor is a superior shaver, and those blades are super sharp. Don't think about shaving hair. Use them almost like a hovercraft to just remove lather, barely touching skin, with zero pressure. The sharp blades will do the rest.

Good luck!

I started ACs with the Feather Pro...still use em. Haven’t really bothered to try others since they work so good for me.
I started with the Schick ProLines and Feather Pros. I like them both. Have a Kai Captain Original in the General now and am enjoying it.

I was trying the ambi practice shave thing and it felt fine. However, it will be a different game with a blade in. We’ll see...

Thank you Sir for the insight I will endeavour to hover along...

That hover and the hair explodes doesn't happen for me. Difference in hair can make a difference.
I find that with most razors I am still putting a little bit of effort into the glide. However, this will be new technique so I will take all the advice I can get.

Also remember the SS acts similar to a DE . That bump will push the skin in front of the blade also allowing for more protection and, with experience moving to a no guarded blade. A suggestion however if you plan on moving to a regular straight. Look into the DX versions of the feather system. They better replicate a true straight. The SS is a fantastic shaver, however as Larry mentioned keep your touch light, as many, whom have gone from the SS to a real straight have experience a bit of a false sense of security and place to much pressure on the real straight blade causing issues. Again, the SS is a fantastic shaver however the "push" in front of the shaving surface IMHO can cause some habits that will need to be addressed when you move to regulars straights as the stretching of the skin with a regular straight happens behind the Shaving surface, and you do not have the extra security of the Stretch and the push like with the SS, Just be aware of those differences as the SS was designed to be a much more forgiving razor than the DX or regular straight and is a gateway drug which is a good thing
Hope that helps as well

Thanks @BarberDave I was aware of that little bump and @woodpusher mentioned it also which makes the SS pretty helpful over a DX for a straight noob like me and makes it a great shaver. Honestly, the Kamisori has been of interest to me for awhile as a “style” as opposed to a more traditional western straight. So when @NurseDave posted his SS I was interested! Call it nothing more than a feeble attempt to resist falling into that “straights rabbit hole” by not learning a grip. You dig? ;)

I think the only blade that I would caution against is the Feather Super, it’s a tiny bit larger but that tiny bit is all it takes to slice your head clean off. I have a feeling you’ll really like that razor though, it’s easy to get used to and delivers a great shave with very little effort on your part. The ability to swap out the blade for a fresh blade is nice too. If you keep the blades clean and dry between uses they seem to last a long time.

Thank you Sir I have a single Feather Super in my sampler along with the rest but also the Kai version of the Feather Super too. I have quite a few Schick ProLine and Feather Pro. Most likely, once I am done experimenting with the guard blades, I will resort to the Schick or the Pros which I love in my SEs.

I agree with Chris. When you feel comfortable...... Of course not to assist you in joining us in the Briar Patch, let me know and I will lend you my DX Kamisori to take around the track... In the interest of Science of Course and not to lead you into temptation, Muahahahaha
